is part of physical performance: definition and scope of the concept<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <b>rest<\/b>, from a clinical perspective, can be defined as the set of processes that enable the restoration of <b>homeostasis<\/b> and functional ability following a <b>upload<\/b> physical or psychosocial. It covers the <b>dream<\/b> quality, breaks during a session, recovery between sessions and planned periods of reduced workload. It can be passive (relative inactivity) or <b>active recovery<\/b> (light activity that does not cause significant stress), and the amount required varies depending on the type of exertion, one\u2019s state of health and individual characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>In the <b>physical performance<\/b>, rest forms part of the training process itself because it influences the consolidation of neuromuscular, cardiovascular and metabolic adaptations. Inadequate recovery may limit the adaptive response and be associated with <b>fatigue<\/b> accumulated fatigue, a greater perception of exertion and a temporary decline in performance; excessive and prolonged rest, on the other hand, can reduce the ability to tolerate a workload. Striking a balance between training and recovery is a key principle for maintaining performance safely.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of the concept includes adjustable components and modulating factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Dream<\/b>: quantity, regularity and consistency, as well as an environment that promotes a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Intra- and inter-session recovery: appropriate breaks and sufficient time between high-intensity efforts, depending on the predominant system (strength, power, endurance).<\/li>\n<li>Periodisation: a planned alternation of intensity and volume, with weeks or blocks of loading and unloading.<\/li>\n<li>Individual factors: age, training history, nutritional status and hydration, psychosocial stress, comorbidities and environmental conditions (heat, altitude).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a general guide, the following may be considered signs that rest levels need adjusting: an unusual increase in resting heart rate compared with the individual\u2019s baseline, a sustained reduction in heart rate variability, non-restorative or fragmented sleep, pain or stiffness that interferes with function, impaired performance in habitual submaximal tasks (e.g. reduced speed or strength with familiar loads) and persistent changes in mood or motivation. These signs should be interpreted in context and are not a substitute for a clinical assessment where necessary.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Que_ocurre_en_el_cuerpo_durante_el_sueno_y_la_recuperacion_musculo_hormonas_y_sistema_nervioso\"><\/span>What happens in the body during sleep and recovery: muscles, hormones and the nervous system<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Musculo\"><\/span>Muscle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During the <b>slow-wave sleep (NREM)<\/b> reduces motor activity and energy expenditure, which promotes processes of <b>tissue repair<\/b> and the rebalancing of the <b>protein turnover<\/b>. In this context, the balance between muscle synthesis and breakdown may shift towards synthesis when substrates are available, whilst anabolic and catabolic signals related to prior exercise load and nutritional status are modulated. In <b>REM sleep<\/b> the following appears: <b>muscle atony<\/b>, which restricts movement and protects the neuromuscular system from unwanted actions during dreaming.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hormonas\"><\/span>Hormones<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sleep regulates key circadian rhythms and pulses. A night-time increase in the <b>melatonin<\/b>, with peaks of <b>growth hormone<\/b> particularly at the start of the night during deep NREM sleep, whilst the <b>cortisol<\/b> tends to reach lower levels in the first half of the night and rises as one wakes up. These variations are linked to changes in energy metabolism and the regulation of muscle and connective tissue; in some people, steroid hormones such as <b>testosterone<\/b> show a dependence on total sleep time and sleep architecture.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sistema_nervioso\"><\/span>Nervous system<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The NREM\u2013REM cycle regulates the <b>synaptic homeostasis<\/b> and the <b>plasticity<\/b>, with NREM stages associated with the consolidation of neural traces and the stabilisation of neural circuits, and REM stages involved in the integration of information and the reconfiguration of neural networks. At the regional level, the predominant <b>parasympathetic tone<\/b> during NREM sleep, whilst more pronounced sympathetic oscillations are observed during REM sleep. At the same time, an increase in the clearance of metabolites has been reported during sleep in the <b>glymphatic system<\/b>, a phenomenon that could help to maintain neuronal function under physiological conditions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Descanso_adecuado_y_desempeno_deportivo_que_senalan_estudios_y_guias_clinicas\"><\/span>Adequate rest and sporting performance: what studies and clinical guidelines suggest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Que_indican_guias_clinicas_sobre_el_descanso_en_deportistas\"><\/span>What do clinical guidelines say about rest for athletes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Guidelines from sleep and sports medicine societies recommend prioritising a <b>sufficient and regular sleep<\/b> as part of the recovery process. For adults, at least 7 hours\u2019 sleep per night is recommended, increasing as necessary according to <b>training load<\/b>, age and individual response; in young people, needs tend to be greater. Emphasis is placed on the <b>sleep hygiene<\/b> (consistent bedtimes, a dark and quiet environment, limiting screen time and stimulants before bed) and the benefits of <b>short naps<\/b> (20\u201330 minutes) when sleep duration is insufficient. The use of hypnotics or supplements should be considered with caution and at the clinician\u2019s discretion, due to potential side effects and the risk of tolerance.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Que_senalan_los_estudios_sobre_rendimiento\"><\/span>What do studies on performance show?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Observational evidence links the <b>insufficient rest<\/b> with lower technical precision, slower reaction times, a greater perceived effort and a higher incidence of discomfort or injury. Small-scale controlled trials suggest that the <b>duration of sleep<\/b> may be associated with modest improvements in metrics such as speed, accuracy or reaction time, whilst the <b>partial sleep deprivation<\/b> is associated with impaired submaximal performance and decision-making; the effects vary depending on the sport, the stage of the season and baseline sleep levels. Circadian misalignment (e.g. travel involving jet lag) tends to impair performance and is addressed through light therapy, adjusted schedules and scheduled naps.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Monitorizacion_clinica_y_senales_de_alerta\"><\/span>Clinical monitoring and warning signs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The monitoring combines subjective measures (sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, mood) with objective metrics where available, such as <b>actigraphy<\/b> o <b>heart rate variability<\/b> as an aid, without replacing clinical assessment.
