What is it?
It is known as scoliosis to the lateral curvature forming in the spine vertebral column of those who suffer from it. In some cases it is a hereditary disease and is most common in children and young people in their growth and development.
It is common for all of us to have some deviation in the spine, but it is considered scoliosis when the spine is not straight but deviates in S“ or ”C“ shape”.
Causes
En el caso de la mayoría de las personas the cause is unknown which causes the deviation in the spine, and in others it is scoliosis. congenital and can even have their origin in bad posture or diseases such as muscular dystrophy.
As children with scoliosis enter the developmental stage, right lumbar scoliosis may become more severe.
It is usually asymptomatic in children, but back pain is one of the most common symptoms of lumbar scoliosis in adults, young people and children.
In addition to this, there are also visible signs such as deformities in the bone structures; for example, ribs that protrude more on one side, one shoulder higher than the other or one side of the hip.
In severe cases the difficulty in breathing también está presente, ya que los huesos presionan los órganos impidiendo el funcionamiento óptimo de estos. Los nervios también se ven afectados y hacen que la persona se sienta stiff, tired and exhausted.
Prevention
Maintain a good posture is a way to prevent scoliosis, as scoliosis has a considerable influence on the pathology. Since scoliosis often occurs without pain, it is advisable to see a specialist who can carry out a check-up as soon as a deviation in the child's spine is noticed, however slight it may be.

Scoliosis is classified into different types:

Neuromuscular scoliosis
Scoliosis is caused by a disease of the nervous system, such as muscular dystrophy.
Congenital scoliosis
It is present from birth due to malformation or when the vertebrae and ribs do not form correctly.
Structural scoliosis
Structural scoliosis is when the curvature of the spine is permanent due to either a malformation or a blow.
Non-structural scoliosis
Es cuando la curvatura que se forma en la columna solo es temporal. Para que esto sea posible es recomendable abordar esta patología desde su comienzo y así poder corregirlo antes de que avance.
Diagnosis
In order to assess a case of scoliosis, a physical examination is carried out called Adams test or the forward bend test to determine whether the degree of curvature of the spine falls within accepted parameters or not. In this test, the patient is asked to bend forward, and the chiropractor will then assess the spine, shoulders and pelvis.
Similarly, to find out the true degree of curvature, X-rays of the spine are taken to see what the physical examination did not reveal.
Treatment
El abordaje dependerá de la causa de la escoliosis, su gravedad y la edad del persona. Dependiendo del caso algunos especialistas recomiendan que la persona use un corset or do posture exercises. However, when the deviation is severe or due to a fall, one or more of the following is chosen surgical interventions.
When it comes to childhood scoliosis, it is best to treat it as early as possible, so that the condition has as little impact as possible on the person’s life.
In any case, the best thing to do is to go to an experienced specialist who can treat scoliosis from the beginning and not let it progress, in our chiropractic centre you will find an experienced chiropractic doctor trained to treat your condition.
Risk factors
Risk factors include the following family history, In some cases scoliosis is hereditary, although, as mentioned above, it most commonly has no known cause.
Children and adolescents in stage of growth (ages 8 to 18) are the most likely to develop a crooked spine, as scoliosis is colloquially known.
Finally, those who do not take care of their posture and the weight they carry on their spine are more likely to suffer from back diseases than those who have better habits.
Complications
Although in most cases scoliosis is mild and uncomplicated, when the condition is severe and advanced it can become complicated to the point where it can cause unevenness in the shoulders or an unevenness in the hips and ribs.
En algunas personas el desnivel es tan pronunciado que las vértebras pueden llegar a pressure on the lungs and heart, significantly affecting their functioning and causing difficulty in breathing.
Further information

When scoliosis is severe and progressive, the best approach is to to be attended to as soon as possible. Children with this condition are more prone to deformities and respiratory problems when the deviation is very pronounced.
