What is it?

The jaw is connected to the skull by joints that run parallel to each side of the jaw. These are called temporomandibular joints and allow the jaw to slide easily.

When these joints are affected, the following occurs pain in the muscles and jaw that enable chewing, This hinders the mobility of the jaw and even causes pain in the face because of the muscle contraction. This is known as temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ.

Causes

There are many factors that can cause a person to suffer from temporomandibular joint syndrome. For example, in some cases it may be influenced by the stress and anxiety because excessive pressure is put on these muscles and tendons, which can lead to strain.

Also, mention can be made of the genetic factors, poor dentition  or certain diseases such as arthritis or gout. In addition to this, receive a a blow that could dislocate or break the jaw can cause severe pain in that area.

Other causes include wear and tear on the cartilage or disc of the joint, some of which can be caused by malformations and the bad posture, especially where the head is held in one position for many hours, can also lead to the development of jaw pain.

Injury to the temporomandibular joint causes pain in the jaw muscles and face, either one-sided or bilateral, and can extend in some cases to the area in and around the ears, as well as to the neck muscles and even cause headaches.

You can experience difficulty opening and closing the mouth and especially for chewing. In addition, the affected area becomes hypersensitive.

Prevention

In order to prevent such a disease it is important to maintain a good nutrition to provide your body with all the nutrients your muscles and joints need for optimal function.

In addition to this, it is advisable to maintain good posture habits, as well as avoid grinding teeth and biting nails.

It is very important to take care of how the jaw is used. avoiding eating hard food or cutting it into small pieces to make them much easier to chew.

It is essential to see a specialist who can carefully examine the jaw and provide the patient with certain recommendations to prevent the condition from worsening. At the Salud Quiropráctica clinic you will receive precise advice from professionals to heal and prevent temporomandibular jaw syndrome.

Diagnosis

There is no one medical test that is applied in all cases to diagnose TMJ, but the most common is for the specialist to perform a physical examination which basically consists of touching certain areas of the jaw, neck, face and head, looking for any reaction to pain in order to know which area is specifically affected. It is also necessary to ask the patient what symptoms he/she is experiencing and since when.

It is important to observe the patient's jaw in order to study the range of mobility and, when this is not sufficient to provide a diagnosis, the following should be carried out X-rays and CT scans to take a close look at the condition of the jaw bones and muscles.

In most cases, surgical interventions are not necessary, as temporomandibular lesions are usually treated by the surgeon. improve in a short time if the necessary medical care is received.

Often, to minimise the pain, it is sufficient to changing eating habits and by carrying out relaxation exercises that relieve pressure on the body and reduce stress.

Some specialists recommend the use of anti-inflammatories, painkillers and muscle relaxants, However, these will only temporarily ease the pain but will not stop the condition itself, so it is best to solve the problem by tackling the cause.

There are several factors that increase the chances of suffering from temporomandibular syndrome. In some cases, it is due to an injury to the jaw, so it is important to avoid extreme and violent sports like boxing.

People who suffer from diseases such as osteoarthritis or scoliosis are more likely to suffer from jaw pain at some time due to problems in the vertebrae or joints.

They are also influenced by bad habits how to chew very hard foods, keep your head tilted forward and poor nutrition, as this weakens tissues and muscles and can even lead to bloating.

Complications

Most patients suffering from temporomandibular joint syndrome make a quick and complete recovery. However, in some cases, the pain caused by joint strain can be severe. become chronic and be accompanied by severe and constant headaches.

Rarely, surgical intervention may be necessary as the jaw becomes dislocated and in turn causes a muscle tear.
