What is it?
The plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia is injured, irritates or inflames, causing pain that intensifies when walking.
When we talk about plantar fascia, we refer to the fibrous tissue that surrounds the heel musculature and runs from the heel to the toes.
This type of condition is quite common, in fact, it is estimated that approximately 30% of people may suffer from it, especially if they are overweight or athletic.
Causes
Plantar fasciitis can originate from the overweight, This is due to the fact that too much of it overloads the foot and exposes the tissue to strain. It is also influenced by the type of shoes as well as the shape of the foot increasing the possibilities for those with flat feet. There is also the postural imbalance that increases the support of one side of the body.
In addition, when the ligament supporting the arch of the foot is subjected to too much pressure, it loses tension, which in turn can lead to a tear. When this happens, the foot becomes inflamed and acute pain is experienced.
In addition, they feel that the bottom of the heel is stiff or tight, swollen, reddened and very sensitive.
Prevention
There are some measures that can be taken to prevent plantar fasciitis, such as wear appropriate footwear The foot is designed for the type of foot, because if it is not correct, an injury may occur. Also, if the arch of the foot is not well pronounced, it may be necessary to use podiatric insoles.
It is equally important to have good eating habits in order to avoiding overweight that may cause excessive load on the feet.
Maintaining a good exercise routine is also recommended as it allows you to exercise and strengthen the muscles, tissues and tendons of the body, including those of the foot.
The care we provide at Salud Quiropráctica can also be useful to you, because we focus on finding the cause of the problem in order to prevent it from appearing. This is done without drugs or invasive procedures.
Treatments
Risk factors
Plantar fasciitis is a disease that in many cases can be prevented, which is why it is important to know the risk factors to avoid them. Here are some of them:
- Overweight: People who are overweight are more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis because they put excessive pressure on the foot and in turn on the fibrous tissue that supports the arch.
- Some works: When the plantar fascia is subjected to excessive stress it becomes injured, irritated and inflamed, which is why you want to have a job that requires constant standing and expose your foot to such an injury.
- Footwear: Wearing worn-out shoes or shoes with inadequate soles increases the chances of suffering from plantar fasciitis.
- Foot shape: People who have too little or too much arch in the foot are at risk of injury, as the weight of the body is not distributed properly over the foot.
Complications
If plantar fasciitis is not treated in time and in the right way, the pain caused by this injury can become chronic y affect the performance of physical activities and even walking.
In other cases, as the person adopts a different gait to avoid pain, the spine, knees and hips may be affected.
Further information
How long does the pain last?
If treated in time, the pain can last for a few weeks and is not constant. But, when medical recommendations are not followed, the foot is not kept at rest and is exposed to long walks, the injury is much more difficult to heal, so pain is experienced constantly and can last for months or even a year.
In conclusion, in most cases duration of pain depends on the cause, degree of fasciitis and medical care que se le brinde al persona.
