What is chiropractic?

Official definition according to the AEQ

Chiropractic is l
The third healthcare professionprimary care discipline (according to the WHO) responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the spine and the neuromusculoskeletal system.

The chiropractor diagnoses and corrects potential joint dysfunctions, referring to these as vertebral subluxations, fixations or joint restrictions with a potential neurological impact. By correcting these, the aim is to stimulate the body’s physiological capacity, given the close relationship between the nervous system, the spine and health – understood as bio-psycho-social well-being according to the WHO.

The spinal column

The spinal column is a vital structure for the body, composed of 7 cervical, 12 dorsal, 5 lumbar, sacrum and coccyx.

It has 3 important functions:

These 3 functions are essential for our health and well-being. If the vertebrae do not work well with each other, it will lead to your nervous system not working properly at 100% and then mobility problems, muscular pains, which will generate a change in the balance of the body and consequently in the posture, will start.

This is the beginning of an alteration of your life. The spine is the key to our health.

Benefits of Chiropractic

There are numerous benefits to receiving chiropractic care, but we could summarise them in 10 points:

The philosophy of Chiropractic

Chiropractic philosophy is based on the inherent healing capacity of the body. The human being has an innate intelligence that allows the body to stay alive. This same vital force is what gives it the ability to heal itself.

This innate intelligence governs the body and controls the inherent regulatory capacity of the organism to heal itself, thus maintaining good health.

The nervous system

The nervous system is responsible for carrying every message the brain sends out, making them reach any part of the body. It is also responsible for controlling all the vital functions of our organism.

Our nervous system is made up of:

The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), The peripheral nervous system (the nerves) The nervous system is responsible for transporting information from the brain to the cells and from the cells to the brain.

It is our body's control tower, so if it encounters interference along the way, two things can happen: Signals may become distorted and exaggerated due to nerve irritation.

Messages then become faint and blurred. our brain loses contact with the affected organs and tissues and these cease to function correctly.

Chiropractic is the profession that works on the nervous system in order to make it function at 100%

Subluxation

The chiropractor detects and corrects joint dysfunctions and nerve interference, commonly called pinching. When this loss of mobility occurs in the vertebra, it is because a vertebral subluxation has occurred, affecting the correct transmission of nerve messages.

This irritation of the nervous system weakens the immune system and impedes the body's homeostasis, i.e. the body's ability to heal itself.

It is important to know that 90% of the subluxations do not produce pain because only 10% of the nerves are associated with pain fibres. This means that we live for years with pinched nerves in the spine, which can affect our organism.

Causes of subluxations

Subluxations can be caused by chemical, traumatic or emotional factors. These factors are caused by experiences in our lives that are not well assimilated by our organism., This can cause interference in the nervous system, which can lead to other health problems in the body.

Chemical factors are determined by substances that affect our body, or the food we eat: pollution, pesticides, environmental toxins, unhealthy food or dehydration, tobacco, alcohol or drugs, medication, etc.

Traumatic factors refer to experiences that affect our development. In the case of children: the birth process, exercise and sports, learning to walk, etc. And in adulthood: these factors refer to those gestures or postures that can affect the health of our spine: bad posture or poorly performed physical exercise, falls or accidents, inappropriate weight lifting, sedentary lifestyles, etc.

Emotional factors refer to how our thoughts (especially negative ones) affect our body by producing toxic chemicals that irritate our nervous system, leading to subluxations in our spine. These negative emotions can be anger, frustration, rage, fear, guilt, stress or anxiety.

Vertebral adjustments

Chiropractic care mainly consists of spinal adjustments.

Chiropractors treat subluxations – or vertebrae that have lost their natural mobility – by applying a gentle, precise, safe and painless movement.

Spinal adjustments vary from person to person. The techniques are tailored to suit the individual’s age, condition and state of health.

Chiropractic training

A university degree in chiropractic lasts a total of five years and comprises 5,500 teaching hours. Covering subjects ranging from anatomy and physiology to neurology and radiology, it is a comprehensive and specialised course of study that includes hundreds of hours of manual chiropractic techniques.

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession recognised in more than 70 countries and is the third-largest healthcare specialism worldwide, according to the WHO.

Our chiropractors trained at the Franco-European Institute of Chiropractic (IFEC) in Paris. They were awarded the title of "Doctor of Chiropractic", the only qualification recognised worldwide in the field of chiropractic. They are all members of the Spanish Chiropractic Association (AEQ).

Continuing professional development is essential for remaining at the forefront of chiropractic care. This is ensured by compulsory attendance at annual seminars, conferences and supplementary training courses, which is a prerequisite for retaining one’s licence and continuing to practise as a chiropractor.
