What is it?
The facial neuralgia, also frequently referred to as trigeminal neuralgia, is the inflammation and irritation of the trigeminal nerve, The brain is responsible for getting the sensations perceived by the face to the brain.
When the trigeminal nerves are damaged, the following occurs a sudden pain in the face which is accompanied by muscle spasms, sensory disturbances in the face and may extend to the neck and skull.
Causes
In most cases there is no specific cause for this pathology.
However, studies show that there are certain diseases and factors that can cause it. In some cases, it is due to the fact that some blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve which in turn causes pain in the face.
It is also influenced by the infections in the mouthIn addition to this, a probable cause is certain tumours or a facial malformation that prevents the 12 pairs of nerves surrounding the face from being in their correct position.
In addition, it experiences a tingling sensation y muscle contraction on the face, pero las manifestaciones se perciben también en el cuello y el cráneo.
Sometimes the pain gets worse at night and is intensified by movements, brushing teeth, eating and even feeling the breeze. The reason is that the skin becomes very sensitive because the trigeminal nerve constantly sends pain signals to the brain.
Prevention
Although there is no way to prevent facial neuralgia, the best thing to do is to acudir a un especialista al sentir algún manifestación of those already mentioned, with the aim of preventing the disease from becoming more complicated.

Diagnosis
Para valorar a un persona con neuralgia facial es necesario know your medical history, in addition to the manifestaciones which presents, and the consistency and duration of the symptoms. In some cases, laboratory tests for infection may be necessary.
In addition to this, it will also be necessary to carry out a magnetic resonance imaging to see every part of the face in detail, with emphasis on the trigeminal nerve, in order to look for any irritation, inflammation or obstruction of the trigeminal nerve. And, although in some cases this is not easy to visualise, the MRI will also serve to rule out pathology.
Treatment
Como parte del enfoque se utilizan analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to soothe pain and even some anticonvulsant or antidepressant which acts as a sedative.
Cuando el persona se vuelve resistente a los fármacos, los médicos sugieren realizar una surgical intervention to push back into place any artery or blood vessel compressing the nerve.
However, not in all cases surgery is successful, so it is advisable to make use of enfoques alternativos como la quiropraxia which uses techniques that can help to cope with pain and even reduce it.
Risk factors
These are some of the risk factors that increase a person's chances of suffering from trigeminal neuralgia:
- DiseasesSclerosis is a disease that can cause deterioration of the muscles, tendons and nerves surrounding the trigeminal nerve, leaving it exposed and at risk of infection, irritation or inflammation. - Age: Pain in the face due to trigeminal neuralgia is more common in women in their fifties and older.
- Malformations: Any malformation that interferes with the optimal functioning of nerves, muscles and tendons may cause facial neuralgia.

Sin embargo, en otros casos esas complicaciones se deben a que el enfoque produce algún efecto secundario o porque no se realizó una intervención quirúrgica efectiva y quedan secuelas como la loss of sensitivity on the face.
