What is whiplash?
The whiplash is an injury that is often associated with road accidents, especially those where another car hits our car from the rear or side.
The whiplash occurs when there is a rapid movement that throws the neck and head first backwards and then forwards or sideways, one side and then the other.
This movement places a sudden high stress on the cervical spine structure that it cannot cope with. This is when the soft tissue or bone injury occurs. Thus, the injury is caused by a rapid movement of hyperflexion and hyperextension of the neck or hyperlateral flexion of the cervical spine.
It can also happen while practising sports such as skiing, skating or horse riding, or during free-fall jumps such as parachuting or bungee jumping. In other words, in those activities that involve extreme acceleration and deceleration forces applied to the cervical spine.
Whiplash symptoms
It is usually pain in the neck and has a wide range. That is, it can range from mild tingling to absolutely incapacitating. It can occur in association with movement of the neck, both laterally and forwards and backwards.
Other symptoms that appear are limitation of movement and stiffness, neck instability, headaches or pain in the upper back and shoulders.
You may also feel numbness, weakness or tingling radiating from the shoulder into the hand.
Sometimes the symptoms do not appear from the first moment. They may not start to be felt until 24-48 hours after the accident, depending on the physical condition of the person and the violence of the movement suffered.
What happens is that a few years later, the person will start to notice tingling, numbness in the hands or fingers, headaches, dizziness, vertigo and neck pain.
At this point, by means of an X-ray, we will discover a RECTIFICATION of the cervical CURVE or even the appearance of herniated discs.
