The scoliosis It is a silent condition that can lead to other health problems. We explain how chiropractic care can help you if you suffer from it.
What is scoliosis?
We call it scoliosis to spinal deformity. It usually occurs during childhood growth. It is characterised by the presence of lateral curvatures along the spine, to the left or right, together with a rotation of the vertebrae. Generally, two compensatory curves develop, meaning that the spine takes on an «S» shape. This condition is often asymptomatic in its early stages, as it does not always cause pain. Any change in a child’s posture is already a sign that their spine is not as healthy as we might think.
How can scoliosis be detected?
Symptoms that may occur:
- When our shoulders are uneven, or if we notice that one shoulder blade sticks out more than the other when we are standing.
- The curved shape of our spine, i.e. a hump or bulge when the child leans forwards.
- If one hip is higher than the other.
- If, when getting dressed, we notice that our clothes don’t quite fit properly.
- Back pain.
- Difficulty maintaining an upright and correct posture
It is very important to detect the scoliosis before adolescence, as the earlier it is detected, the more we can prevent serious consequences in the future.
What are the causes?
Many cases of this condition are classified as “idiopathic”, which means that the cause is unknown.
On the other hand, there are two types of scoliosis: structural and non-structural.
- Structural scoliosis is one in which the spine appears curved but can function normally. These cases may be due to postural imbalances. It may also occur scoliosis in old age, usually due to degenerative problems and a misaligned structure that has persisted over time.
- Non-structural scoliosis These are caused by congenital conditions, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies… health problems that cause the spine to curve.
Scoliosis is usually diagnosed during childhood or adolescence, at times of growth spurts.
How can chiropractic help?
